| ACADEMIC
INTEGRITY In order to foster a healthy and appropriate atmosphere for learning
Hillhouse High School expects its students to conform to certain standards of academic
integrity. Students need to know that cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Cheating is to act
dishonestly or to assist another in dishonesty. Examples include, but are not limited to
the following:
- Unauthorized use of prepared materials
during testing
- Copying of another students homework, class
work, or tests
- Collaboration with any person without the
teachers knowledge
- Altering school records / Forging signatures
Plagiarism is to use the
language, ideas, data and/or organization of another and to present this material as the
product of ones own mind. Examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to the
following:
- Having a parent or another person write
ones paper or do ones project
- Copying, summarizing or paraphrasing
directly from a published source or any computer or electronically generated aid (internet
sources, calculators, translators, etc.) without proper documentation.
- If a student is found to be in violation of
academic integrity and is found cheating on tests or plagiarizing papers the breech of
integrity will result in receiving a zero (0) on the assigned test, quiz, research paper,
or paper.

ASSEMBLIES AND CLASS
MEETINGS
Assemblies are designed as an integral part of the educational experience at Hillhouse. We
will provide both informative and entertaining presentations throughout the school year.
Courtesy demands respect and appreciation for the presenters. Refrain from talking during
the presentation and keep their feet off the seats. Students talking, booing, or not
showing disrespect will be removed from the auditorium and referred to an assistant
principal. When there is assigned seating, students must sit in the designated area with
their instructors
. |
ATTENDANCE POLICY THE 160 DAY RULE
- A school year consists of 180 days.
- Students must be in school for a minimum of
160 days.
Students who are not
present 160 days may fail for the year. Hillhouse has an attendance committee. The
committee will send out letters to notify parents and students at the following times:
- Warning
..............4 - 8 days
- Critical
............11 -
14 days
- Danger
............9 -10
days
- Mandatory Meeting...15 - 19 days

BOOKS, EQUIPMENT, AND UNIFORMS
Books, equipment, uniforms, etc. issued to you are your responsibility. You are required
to reimburse the school for any books or equipment lost or damaged while in your care. New
books and materials will not be issued unless student debts are cleared.

CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE
Students who miss 20 or more days of a class may lose credit in that class for the year.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Classroom discipline is essential for effective learning. Students are expected to
cooperate with their instructors in maintaining an orderly environment for learning.
Students who show disrespect to the instructor, teacher or peers, who refuse to obey a
reasonable request by a staff member, or who disrupt the classroom environment will be
referred for disciplinary action.

CUTS
Students are expected to attend each class if they are present in school.
Any time a student cuts a class, the parent will be notified by telephone and in writing.
Consequences for cutting class are as follows:Half year courses:
- 1st cut = warning
- 2nd cut = loss of credit
Full year courses:
- 1st cut = warning
- 2nd cut = loss of ˝ credit
- 3rd cut = warning
- 4th cut = loss of credit

DRESS CODE
Fundamental propriety and safety govern what students may wear to school. Attire or
grooming that is disruptive to the educational environment will result in disciplinary
action. Coats and hats are not to be worn inside the building. Coats and hats are to be
kept in your locker. Short shorts, short skirts, and short dresses, are not allowed. Tank
tops, spaghetti straps, and bare midriffs are not allowed. All hats must be removed while
in school. Wording and artwork on clothing must be appropriate for the school setting.

DRUGS / ALCOHOL / CIGARETTES
The possession, sale, distribution, or use of controlled substances
(drugs/alcohol/cigarettes) will not be tolerated. The police will be notified as required
by law.

EARLY DISMISSAL
Early dismissal must be requested only in an emergency or unusual situation. Only your
parent/guardian may sign you out. Your parent/guardian must be registered in our database
and present photo I.D.

ELECTRONIC
DEVICES
No radios, headphones, telephones, beepers, or cassette players are allowed in school.
These items will be confiscated and held by an administrator. The administrator will not
be held responsible for these items.

GAMBLING / EXTORTION / SOLICITATION
You may not participate in card playing, pitching money, or gambling of any kind. All
cards, gambling paraphernalia, and money will be confiscated and not returned. Engaging in
"panhandling" or soliciting students is forbidden.

HALLWAYS / SCHOOL GROUNDS
The corridors are extensions of the classroom. We expect you to behave properly, to show
concern for others, and to walk in a safe and considerate manner (keep to your right).
Running, littering, making unnecessary noise, loitering, blocking access to others, using
offensive language, or engaging in displays of excessive affection are not permitted.

HARASSMENT / DISCRIMINATION
Discrimination and/or harassment for any reason based on race, color, religious creed,
age, gender, martial status, national origin, ancestry, present or past history of mental
disorder, mental retardation, learning disability or physical disability, or sexual
orientation. will not be tolerated.
Sexual Harassment in any form will not be tolerated.

HOMEWORK
Students are required to perform designated assignments and tasks beyond those that can be
performed during regular school hours. Assignments will be directed and required by
teachers. Homework assignments are to be an integral part of the education process for the
students.

BADGES
- All students should have
their own personal school ID badge.
- Student ID badges should
be worn at all times.
- Student ID badges are made
and distributed by Mr. Lynch, room E104

IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION (ISS)
- The student must report to the ISS room at
the directive of any administrator.
- Students must bring work to do or work will
be issued to them.
- Community Service is an integral part of In
School Suspension and will be used at the discretion of the administrator.

INSUBORDINATION
Intentionally defying the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, or the
rules and regulations published by the school is insubordination and will not be allowed.

PASSES
Students who have been detained by a staff member, and are therefore late to class, must
receive a pass from that teacher. You must report to your destination without loitering or
disrupting classes. Students who abuse the pass system will not be allowed to obtain
passes in the future. These passes must be obtained from an administrator, classroom
teacher or library specialist.

POSTERS AND NOTICES
- With permission, students may post
information about specific events or groups relating to Hillhouse and other New Haven
Public Schools. All posters must be approved by the principal.
- Notices may be hung on bulletin boards and
tiled walls. Nothing may be hung in other areas.

SCHOOL DANCES
- Only Hillhouse students may attend (except
Sweetheart Ball and Prom).
- You may not bring refreshments of any type
to school dances or proms.
- Once you leave the dance, you may not
return.
- You are not permitted to enter the dance
after (9:00) p.m. unless you have special permission from an administrator.
- All New Haven Board of Education policies
and school rules are in effect at school dances.

SEARCH AND SEIZURE
Desks and school lockers are the property of the school, placed there for the temporary
convenience of students. The right to inspect desks, lockers assigned to students, may be
exercised by school administrators. Students personal property (such as book bags)
may also be searched with probable cause.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
Good behavior and a commitment to learning are the essential ingredients for success in
high school. A spirit of cooperation and support help us in establishing pride, school
spirit, and an atmosphere conducive to learning. Hillhouse students have a reputation for
scholarship and school citizenship. We expect each student to be a positive contributor to
the school community and to the community at large. Your behavior is a reflection not only
of yourself but also of your school. We expect each student to support and abide by the
rules and regulations developed for the good of all. The key to maintaining the proper
educational environment is respect: respect for yourself and for the adults who work with
you. Please have respect for the rights of others and for the property and equipment
provided for your use.

TARDY
TO CLASS
All students are expected to arrive on time for all classes. When the late bell sounds
teachers close their classroom doors and begin class. Students who arrive after the bell
must report to the closest administrator.

TARDY TO HOMEROOM
Before 7:30:
Students stay in cafeteria
7:30 Bell:
Students go to lockers and to homeroom
7:45 Bell
(late bell for homeroom):
For every five tardies to homeroom the student must attend one Saturday Academy session
(9-11am)
After homeroom:
Report to the ISS room and remain there until the end of first period unless accompanied
by parent or guardian. Following the tenth tardy after homeroom, students must be
accompanied by a parent or guardian.After 8:30 Students must be accompanied by a parent or
guardian.

TELEPHONE
MESSAGES TO STUDENTS
Students may not receive personal calls or messages during the school day. Only those
messages of an emergency nature will be considered. Changes in personal appointments,
transportation arrangements, and reminders of appointments cannot be communicated to
students. The schools goal is to minimize classroom interruptions in order to
maximize instructional time.

VANDALISM
AND FIRE ALARMS
Vandalism, which is the destruction or defacing of school property, will not be tolerated.
Students and parents will be held financially responsible for damages. knowingly misusing
fire and safety devices installed for the protection of the buildings occupants is
illegal and will result in prosecution.

VISITORS
Unfortunately, NO visitors are allowed!

WEAPONS
If you are caught with a weapon, you will have an automatic 10 day suspension, be
recommended for expulsion, and subject to arrest.

WORKING PAPERS
Working papers may be obtained at the New Haven Board of Education, Gateway Center
Personnel Office. In order to be eligible for working papers, you must: Be sixteen &
show proof of age & have a "Promise of Employment"
