JAMES HILLHOUSE ARMY JUNIOR ROTC
NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT
ROTC is a high school course given during regular school hours but includes many
out-of-classroom activities. We
cover the basics in history, government, technology awareness, and current
events. But we also teach leadership
skills (like how to motivate others) and personal skills (how to study, take
tests, interview for jobs). And we
offer extracurricular activities like drill team and color guard.
You might even have a chance to go to a JROTC summer camp where youll
train on confidence courses, play team sports, and learn land navigation and
water safety techniques.
No JROTC cadet
is under any obligation to join the military.
Our interest is simply to give the student an opportunity to develop and improve themselves in ways schools generally dont offer. We arent promoting the military lifestyle. But we do use military skills to teach self-discipline, confidence and pride in a job well done.
The James Hillhouse Army Junior ROTC program (the Bulldog Battalion) currently has 75 participating cadets. The program is in its 9th year. The program is an elective at the school and the cadets receive one credit for attending one class a day. A cadet battalion staff consisting of ten staff members and assistants run the activities. After school there are many activities such as a staff meeting, Drill Team practice, a Raiders team practice or Color Guard Practice.
